Salem Sound’s main attraction is the dozen offshore rocky islands, including the beautiful Misery Islands. Also, on a windy, summer day, the view of hundreds of sailboats gliding across the horizon from Marblehead, Salem, and Manchester Harbors is magnificent. The trip starts with a beach launch from Devereux Beach at the west end, where the beach is more level. Don’t launch or land inside the swimmer buoys. If the surf is too rough, an alternate put-in spot is across the road at Riverhead Beach, which puts you at the head of Marblehead Harbor. From Devereux, paddle past Marblehead Neck, around the outside of Tinkers Island, then hug the steep and rocky Marblehead Neck past historic Castle Rock and to the inside of Marblehead Rock (a major seabird nesting island), past the Marblehead Light and Chandler Hovey Park to Jack Point at the outermost tip of Marblehead Harbor.
