A popular sea kayak trip is a circumnavigation of Plum Island, about a 19-mile excursion. The trip combines paddling up one side of Plum Island along ocean beach, passing through the mouth of the Merrimack River, and winding down the other side through the Plum Island River and into Plum Island Sound. Plum Island is an 8-mile–long barrier beach with 4,650 acres of dune protecting the marshland, which is a refuge for waterfowl along the Atlantic flyway. More than 300 species have been sighted, especially during spring and fall shorebird migrations. Large flocks of waterfowl are present in fall and early spring. Peak migration is from March 1 to June 7 and from August 1 to October 31.
