Vinalhaven and the surrounding Fox Islands are more remote than some other paddling areas on the Maine coast. Pristine islands far out in Penobscot Bay, a strong fishing culture, and a view of Isle au Haut 7 miles across East Penobscot Bay are the rewards. Once on Vinalhaven, you will realize how island life revolves around the coming and going of the ferry. When the weather worsens, the ferry stops altogether. Islanders are often better than visitors at adapting to this flexible schedule. This kayak trip is not for someone on a tight or fixed schedule. Vinalhaven is a large, wooded island. With about 1,200 year-round residents (9,000 in summer), it is one of the largest island communities and is the third largest island on the Maine coast. Vinalhaven is still very much on “island time,” and after strolling down Main Street you will feel as though you have drifted back into another era. The natural beauty of the island is remarkable. You paddle by bald, lunar-like islands on the east side with a view toward Isle au Haut. The Fox Islands Thorofare between Vinalhaven and North Haven is also very scenic.
