This trip accesses the North Fowl Lake entry point through Little John Lake and John Lake. Then it heads west along the Voyageurs Trail. Most of the lakes are large; they are much longer than they are wide and have few or no islands. They look, one paddler remarked, like they were created for the canoe tripper to use. They are also kind to fishermen. All of the common Boundary Waters game fish are found in these lakes, and there is a stream trout lake just over the hill from Mountain Lake. This trip does not return to the put-in point, so a shuttle is necessary. Independence Day storm–affected area.
