This is primarily a fishing trip. Lake trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout lakes are available, as well as walleye and excellent northern pike water. It is also useful for acquiring paddling and portaging experience in the BWCAW and connects to longer canoe routes, if the sought-after entry points are full. This trip starts with a steep, uphill, 80-rod portage from the road to Ram Lake. Ram Lake covers 67 acres, is 40 feet deep in spots, and has very clear water. It is a designated trout lake that is stocked and managed by the state. According to a recent survey, lake trout were most numerous, but some large rainbows are also present. Anglers should work this lake thoroughly. It is worth the effort. There are two campsites available if the fishing is too good to leave the first day.
