A fast and challenging river that promises great fun for experienced paddlers and great misery for beginners. The Sturgeon is the fastest-flowing river in the Lower Peninsula, and also one of the most challenging for canoeists. You’ll encounter obstacles—including strainers, sweepers, rocks, and narrow passages—at an exhilarating pace. Many of these hazards seem to be strategically placed on the outside of tight turns, and the boat naturally wants to follow the strong current right into them. Although the Sturgeon has no true whitewater, bow and stern paddlers will have to communicate early and often to escape unscathed.

I took this trip with two of my sons they were both in Kayaks and I was in a 16' canoe by myself. This is a very fun trip if you are going to be close by for some other reason and want to take a day to do it. we drove up (10 hrs) for a weekend for this trip and won't do that again. for anyone who has been canoes 5 times in there life they can manage, the water ran very fast for the area and you don't get to go straight for any real distance. the river is narrow and some of the turns can pose a problem if you are in a 16' canoe by yourself but I managed fine. We had a fantastic day but would drive 10 hours to a different location next time.
