This scenic area near Traverse City offers several outstanding day trips with views of lighthouses, beaches, and hillsides covered with orchards and vineyards. The Old Mission Peninsula, which juts 15 miles north into Grand Traverse Bay from bustling Traverse City, is a lovely area known for its cherry and apple orchards, vineyards, sandy beaches, and historic lighthouse. One of the best ways to view the peninsula’s many charms is by sea kayak. Its protected location—sandwiched between the Leelanau Peninsula to the west and the mainland of Lower Michigan’s mitten to the east—means that the waters surrounding the peninsula remain relatively undisturbed except by strong northerly winds.
