The Old Mission Peninsula divides Grand Traverse Bay into east and west arms. At the northern tip of the peninsula is a township park with great view of Grand Traverse Bay, and a historic lighthouse. The lighthouse began service in 1870 and rests almost exactly on the forty-fifth parallel, halfway between the pole and the equator. The light is no longer in service and has been replaced by a modern lighthouse, located on a concrete pylon about 1.5 miles north of the tip of the peninsula. No specific route is described. This is really just a great place to put in your kayak or just wade and play at the beach. Outside of the lighthouse park, most if not all of the waterfront land is privately owned so please respect property rights and do not land unless invited. Kayakers who insist on having a destination can shuttle a car to Bowers Harbor for an 8-mile paddle down the west side of the peninsula, or you can head down the east side for 3 miles to the swimming beach at Old Mission.
