Beaver Island and the nearby islands of High Island and Garden Island are fascinating areas to explore by kayak. Beaver Island, the largest island, has 350 year-round residents, two historic lighthouses, beautiful sand beaches, and a fascinating history that includes the self-declared “King of Beaver Island.” Much of the main island is private land, but there are still large tracts of wild state lands to explore. High Island and Garden Island have almost no private land holdings and offer a true wilderness camping experience. The smaller islands have abundant wildlife, including many gulls and shore birds, and a significant population of large but harmless water snakes.
