The long narrow Waugoshance Point and the chain of small rock and gravel islands at its tip reach 7 miles west into Lake Michigan. The point and the islands consist of low rock and gravel beaches covered with a mixed evergreen and hardwood boreal forest. The islands are surrounded by a large shoal, and with even small changes in the water level, the shoreline changes and small islands appear and disappear. Part of the charm of this area is that you can visit year after year, and it will never look exactly the same. The Wilderness State Park is home to a variety of wildlife and interesting plant life including all of the wild orchids native to Michigan. The miles of gravel and rock beach and the many small islands are an ideal habitat or gulls and wading shore birds, including the endangered piping plover.
