Like Isle Royale, the Susie Islands give paddlers a taste of the Canadian North Shore, with cobble beaches, rocky basalt and granite points covered with boreal forest, and a few arctic plants left behind after the retreat of the glaciers at the end of the last ice age. Access is a problem, however. There are no close public launch points, and camping is not allowed on the Susie Islands. Susie Island itself is owned by the Nature Conservancy, and the remaining islands belong to the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa. Both ask that boaters do not land on the islands without permission. The lack of close launch points and restrictions on landing and overnight camping make this a long and therefore advanced day trip.
