A day trip to Basswood Island is an excellent option when rough weather makes other trips difficult. Located about 1.5 miles from shore near the Red Cliff Buffalo Bay Tribal Marina, the island is well sheltered by the outer Apostle Islands from most wind directions. Basswood Island has a fascinating history, being the site of several farms, lumbering activity, and a sandstone quarry. For more detailed information on the island’s history, pick up the Park Service’s brochure on the island.
