This short and easy paddle serves as a brief introduction to the Portage Waterway portion of the Keewenaw Water Trail. Unlike the other Keewenaw trips in this guide, this one is an urban paddle with views of old mine buildings, now falling to ruin. Although some of the copper mines on the Keewenaw Peninsula have been turned into museums or historical displays (such as the Quincy Mine Hoist visible on the ridgeline above Hancock), the buildings along this section are simply abandoned and have the eerie appearance of a ghost town. The setting is appealing; the waterway runs below the two cities of Houghton and Hancock, each on a ridge, facing the other across the waterway. The views are especially good when fall color is at its best.
