In a landscape otherwise planted in corn and soybeans, the Cottonwood forms a long, wooded oasis as it flows eastward to join the Minnesota River at New Ulm. The river runs through several stretches of swift water but no real whitewater. Depending on the amount of streambank erosion, you may also have to maneuver around some snags, especially in the stream's upper reaches.
