Sand Creek is a swift, thrilling run when the water is high. It consists of class I and class II chains of waves, with plenty of maneuvering required down a narrow, twisting river channel. Railroad Rapids, a series of small ledges located beneath a railroad trestle near the end of the run, is probably the toughest of Sand Creek's whitewater. Even so, the penalty for messing up isn't great, unless a sweeper has lodged in the current. If so, give it a wide berth. Portage if necessary.
