Quick current and towering bluffs reward canoeists on this stretch. The Root continues its path to the Mississippi, alternating through pools and sections of light rapids. Unfortunately for the paddler, Minnesota Highway 16 hugs the river all the way down to Peterson. With traffic speeding by, it's tough to lose yourself in solitude. On the other hand, the valley is becoming deeper and more spectacular with every mile, as high bluffs and cliffs rise on either side.
