A small woodland stream with lively current and several easy rapids, the sunrise is a good bet in the spring or after rain, when the water is high. From Kost Dam County Park, the Sunrise winds through mostly open land. But below the town of Kost, the stream slips into bottomland and low-lying forest. Most of the river's rapids are class I, but one drop, where the river narrows about a mile above the river's mouth, rates an easy class II.
