This small river with a lively current provides an oasis of woodland in an area otherwise devoted to agriculture. It is passable only in medium to high water levels. Impassable shallows in low water. Snags and farm fences may block the channel and pose a hazard in high, swift water. The North Fork of the Crow River spills from Lake Koronis near Paynesville and runs more than 100 miles to its confluence with the Mississippi at Dayton, providing an oasis of bottomland forest in the midst of rolling farmland. The river forms several easy rapids in its upper reaches. For the rest of its length, however, the river is undeniably placid.
