With mile after mile of long, easy rapids, wooded bluffs, and good fishing, the final section of the Kettle River is one of the finest day-long canoe runs in Minnesota. The river is more than 200 feet wide in its final few miles, and swamping in the rapids can lead to a long swim. Be especially careful in cold water. Whether you’re paddling to enjoy scenery, to watch wildlife, to fish, or to get a dose of light-duty whitewater, this stretch of the Kettle makes for one of the best canoe trips going. The first 7 miles of this stretch wind through bottomland forest, where you’re likely to spot songbirds, waterfowl, kingfishers, and perhaps beavers and otters.
