The Elk is a quiet woodland river, tailor-made for a day's paddle or fishing trip. It glides through shallow, rocky rapids and sandy swifts as it passes marshes, rolling hills, forested bluffs, and farmland. Although the rapids are short and easy, windfalls may block the river. In fact, the upper reaches, near Becker, can be impassable.

This is a great canoe trip for a beginner (like me) the river doesn''t flow too rapidly, and it often opens up into lakes, which kept me from running into the edges. The trail is easily accessible from many areas of Minnesota, so it makes a great training or practice run.
