The metro stretch of the Mississippi varies dramatically. At times gritty and industrial, nonetheless offers an oasis of nature in the heart of the city. The 6-mile stretch from Coon Rapids Dam to Interstate 694 resembles the river farther upstream, with several easy rapids, deep rocky holes, a fringe of woods along the bank, and good fishing. Homes line the banks in places, but the river appears largely natural.
