This cluster of islands provides protected water for a day trip-the only such spot on Minnesota's North Shore. Unfortunately, the islands themselves are not open for public use. The Susies are rocky and rugged, covered only by a thin veneer of spruce, fir, and bog birch and a variety of ground-hugging plants. surrounded by Lake Superior, the islands are bathed by cool, moist air, creating a micro-climate quite different from the conditions found on the mainland.
