The North Shore of Lake Superior is a rocky shoreline, often treacherous, but also beautiful. It can be traveled by canoe, but a sea kayak is better suited to these unprotected and often windswept waters. Hazards include sudden storms with high waves, very cold water. Logistically, the easiest way to paddle a portion of Minnesota’s shore is to return to where you put in. But because the shore is linear with no way to take a different route on the return, many paddlers will opt to run a shuttle, as though they were running a river. That’s the advantage of having U.S. Highway 61 run along the shore. The disadvantage will be clear after a few minutes on the lake in calm weather during the summer or fall tourist season—the steady drone of traffic is annoying.
