The final stretch of the Vermillion is predominately quiet, but it includes two of the river's most distinctive rapids. Once again the Vermilion starts out with a bang. Not yet out of sight of the Forest Road 491 bridge, it gathers, glides swiftly, and plunges over The Chute, a twisting 10-foot drop over a ledge and large boulders. Don't get pushed into the under cut cliff on either side of this rapid. The Chute rates class III in low water; up to class 5 at very high levels, when the waves become explosive and the current exceedingly pushy. The Gorge, certainly one of the river's most beautiful rapids is the second one you will encounter. The Gorge rates class III in low water and up to class 5 in high.
