Oak Island’s 13-mile beachfront incorporates the communities of Caswell Beach, Yaupon Beach, and Long Beach. Fort Caswell lies on the most northern section of the island. This earthworks fort was constructed in 1826 to guard the entrance to the Cape Fear River. It was captured by Confederates in 1861, and was used again during the Spanish-American War and both world wars. It currently overlooks the Cape Fear River’s more sedate boat traffic. This is an open area, so keep an eye out for boat traffic. The Cape Fear Inlet can be hazardous depending on the weather. Make sure you know the weather and tides and plan your trip carefully. The tidal fluctuation will be from 3 to 4 feet, depending on the wind. Make sure you have a tide chart and plan your trip accordingly.
