When you leave the Cedar Island ferry from Ocracoke, you will get the feeling that you are entering another world yet again. So different from the sleepiness of Ocracoke Island, Cedar Island greets you with a ferry dock and a few homes and businesses. As you drive from the ferry to the launch site, you will soon see why this is a favorite destination with sea kayakers. There are miles and miles of undulating cordgrass and black needlerush, looking like so many wheat fields. The road winds back and forth as you cross the marshes. These wide expanses are dotted with higher ground covered with live oaks and pines. A kayak is the perfect means to explore this watery paradise.
