It’s hard to imagine that you are exploring an inhabited island when you paddle on the west side of Roanoke Island. While the north end of the island is marked by high ground and quite a few homes, the southern and western sides are relatively low, marshy, and secluded. Homes are few and the beaches are deserted and covered with white sand. You can easily spend a whole day beach hopping. I’ve spent days and days exploring every inch of the west side, combing the beach for that special find.
