Wanchese, located on the southern end of Roanoke Island, is a real fishing village. Drive down any of its streets and you’ll most likely see a boat or fishing nets in the yards. As many as fifty large commercial fishing vessels fill the harbor, and fish-packing plants as well as seafood stores line the waterfront. Many of the residents of this individualist village still earn their living from the sea. Once you leave Wanchese Harbor, the southern end of Roanoke Island is inhabited only by wildlife. There are many great fishing holes in its numerous coves and creeks. I recommend spending a day poking around, fishing, or just relaxing.
