No matter what the weather or wind direction, you can always find a calm place to paddle. Explore the waterfront and the soft crab operations along the canals of downtown Manteo and Mother Vineyard. Take an evening paddle past the Lost Colony to see the nightly fireworks, which are a part of the outdoor drama. Wander the deserted beaches on the island’s west side. Look for Civil War artifacts along the shoreline near Skyco on the southwest side, where 10,000 troops were stationed during the war. You can paddle from Wanchese Harbor on the southern end of the island, taking in the commercial fishing village and the surrounding salt marsh, and maybe take along a fishing pole to try your luck in some of the most fertile fishing ground on the Outer Banks.
