Ichawaynochaway Creek contributes the largest ?ow of the lower Flint tributaries. Expansive private and public land tracts have conserved surrounding and nearby wilderness, preserving the creek’s wild and remote aura. Reportedly, the creek’s name is derived from a Muskogee word for sleeping deer. The creek carries different names and spellings in the vicinity: Nochaway, Ichaway, Ichauway. For Georgia paddlers, the name evokes disappointing access issues—in 1997, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that a large landowner had the right to ban paddling on the creek through their property. The 22 miles of river described here are upstream of the restricted area, and downstream of uncontested yet logistically impossible access.
