The Yough is one of the most popular rivers in the East, being supplied from a large reservoir through the dry summer months. It is one of Pennsylvania’s prime recreational areas and is known nationwide among paddlers. Four commercial firms offer guided trips and rent rafts to the general public, and the run gets quite crowded in the summer. Permits are needed to float the river, and these can be scarce on popular summer weekends. The Lower Yough can be rather unforgiving in places, and has taken the lives of several paddlers in recent years. Maryland’s Upper Yough, home to plenty of Class-5 action, has become increasingly popular as paddling skills have improved. Today hundreds of canoeists, kayakers, and rafters enjoy the river during summer releases.
