Somehow the ravagers overlooked one little piece of this beautiful river between Mohawk, West Virginia and Majestic, Kentucky. After leaving Mohawk it is just you and the railroad down in a deep, steep-walled forested canyon periodically decorated by large, intricately weathered sandstone cliffs. There are a few houses at War Eagle, but otherwise the only reminders of the outside world are the incredible plastic jug jams stranded at the sites of flood-stage eddies. The stream meanders down numerous easy, gently graded rapids formed by gravel and small boulders. The water at moderate levels is murky grey from coal dust but is clean enough to support fish. You can extend the trip 2.5 miles to Glen Alum or even 6 additional miles to Devon on a slower river with only a few more scars.
