Birch River above Boggs is small with most of the gradient near Boggs, where it achieves the Class-4 rating. A mile below Birch Falls, it tapers off to Class 2. Farther down, the run starts out with Class-3 water at Herold and then changes to flat water within 3 miles. There is nothing harder than Class-1 water in the last 6 miles of the river. The last of the Class 2–3 rapids on the river, which are at the beginning of this section, can be combined with the section B trip to take in all of the whitewater.
