Sandy Creek is the least popular of the three lower Tygart tributaries, but contains some great whitewater in an isolated setting. This river is 2–3 times larger than Teter or Laurel Creek. There are two sections; one recommended for novices and another for advanced paddlers. The creek from WV 92 to the second bridge at Hiram is mostly flat with a swift current and occasional riffles. There is one solid Class-3+ rapid just above Hiram.
