The North Fork makes its way through the logging towns of Thomas, Coketon, and Douglas. It flows along lazily for several miles before it drops off the edge of the earth near Douglas. This section is comprised of small rock gardens and sloping ledges. Though the scenery isn’t much to look at, this is a nice, relaxing warm-up for the chaos that follows in the next section. Douglas Falls is a 40-foot waterfall into a very shallow landing pool with a tricky slide approach. It’s only been run twice and is not recommended for obvious reasons. The run below here is truly spectacular and will satisfy even the most hardcore creek-boater. Here, boaters can test themselves against an astonishing sequence of slides, waterfalls, and obstructed boulder drops with nasty undercuts. Stay out of the “notches” of steep drops and beware of vertical pins.
