The South Fork of the Mayo meanders through woodlands, presenting the paddler with easy riffles, until it confluences with the North Fork. From there down to the takeout, the river drops faster over a series of ledges for a more challenging course. The USGS gauge is 300 feet downstream from the Rockingham CR 1358 bridge, on the west bank. The minimum level for a solo run is 1.38. The river can be run year-round except during long dry spells.
