The South Toe has its headwaters on Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Rockies (elevation 6,684 feet), which is south from the put-in. It is a delightful stream winding through the mountains over gravel bars and through boulder gardens.
The section between the CR 1152 bridge (Bluerock Road) to the NC 80 bridge in Newdale flows through a particularly scenic area. The water quality drops considerably around Newdale because of silt from local mica mines. It meets the North Toe below Newdale to form the Toe River.
