Hike through jack-pine forests and a variety of other habitats to reach the cobble beaches of Pigeon Hill Bay and views of Petit Manan Light, the second-tallest lighthouse along the Maine coast. The 8,200-acre Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge (MCINWR), managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is composed of three mainland parcels and 55 offshore islands along a 250-mile stretch of the Maine coast ranging from the Isle of Shoals to Cutler. The refuge combines five formerly separate refuges to better reflect the broad scope of its conservation efforts up and down the Maine coast. The island units of MCINWR help protect habitat for nesting seabirds, wading birds, and bald eagles, while the mainland units support habitat for migratory songbirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl.
