Hike along old stone walls amid a pleasant mix of forestlands to the headwaters of the Sheepscot River and the start of its 58-mile journey to the sea. Since 1991, Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance (SWLA) has been working to preserve ecologically significant lands in the watershed of the Upper Sheepscot River. To date, more than 1,500 acres have been protected through outright purchase and conservation easements.
These conserved lands include pleasant forests and open fields, winding streams and scenic marshes, and the high points of Whitten Hill and Goose Ridge. This walk combines a short section of Whitten Hill Trail with Northern Headwaters Trail for a fine loop through the hill country of northwest Montville, where the headwaters of the Sheepscot River is located
