Many folks who start on the short, gentle trail to Toll Memorial fail to get there. Rock Cut is a landmark on Trail Ridge Road, where a slot blasted through a rugged cliff appears rather natural. Ample parking exists on the west side of Rock Cut for those who want to gaze at the glorious view of Gorge Lakes hanging below precipitous peaks on the opposite side of Forest Canyon. Below a wall, amid rocks presumably blasted from Rock Cut and used to bolster the road, is one of the best places in the national park to view pikas, little round-eared rabbit cousins, scurrying busily to gather tundra plants that they store as hay for winter food. Their hay barns are gaps amid the rocks that function as ideal natural rock piles for the pikas, even though the piles are a coincidental result of road building.
