Robert Sterling Yard named Sky Pond when he was guided through newly established Rocky Mountain National Park by Abner Sprague. Yard was researching the park to write an informative brochure for park visitors. Sky Pond is much bigger than Glass Lake, which lies a short way down Icy Brook. And Glass Lake is usually called a much nicer name: Lake of Glass. But these above-tree line tarns at the head of Loch Vale are much better known for their extreme beauty than for their dubious nomenclature. Robert Sterling Yard named both these lakes while hiking with Abner Sprague researching the first educational pamphlet for park visitors a century ago.
