This is a hard- core 12.8-mile out and back or overnight into the little- traveled Snow Mountain Wilderness of the Mendocino National Forest. The hike begins with a 1.0mile gradual descent to a lovely fast- moving creek and up 3,000 feet through pine and oak forests, eventually revealing panoramic views of the Sacramento Valley and the forested mountains.
Only the fittest dog and his human should hike the entire 12.0 miles as a day hike or the 6.0 miles to High Rock for an overnight. Having said that, there are three sites along the way that can make for a shorter but satisfying outing with Pooch.
