The name of this route is an homage to an event called Race Across Oregon (RAO), which o?cially began in 1999. The idea: Soloists, or relay teams, ride nonstop across the state—going all day, all night, and part of the next day to see who can get across the state the fastest (if this sounds like it could have started as a bar bet, it actually did). I did this several times with a team of friends, and for the ?rst few years it actually did go across the state, by various routes. Eventually it morphed to a loop route out of the Portland area, but its soul lives on in this ride—an amalgam of RAO routes and a straighter-line approach to the coast.
