For a good while it’s just a pleasant valley ride without a lot of up-close interaction with water—but that changes when you pass Foster Dam, which gathers water from both the Middle and South forks of the Santiam River. Say what you want about dams, but they do create a nice shoreline to ride along. (And if they make you grumpy, you’ll get plenty of wild-river views later.) Other than a couple short stretches and some spots where the vegetation narrows the edges, there’s a bit of shoulder through here as you skirt the edges of Foster Lake.
