Looking for a short, scenic ride on a sunny summer day? Consider East Seattle. That was the early name for Mercer Island and, although it’s not now officially part of the city, it certainly feels like another neighborhood—albeit one accessible only by boat or floating bridge. Mercer Island seems to be a workout route for cyclists who live in the area, judging by the number of people engaged in a businesslike trek on the quiet, wooded ring road during weekday evenings. But it also can be an enjoyable weekend ride combined with a visit to a lakeside beach.

The combination of hills, views, and tight curves make this an interesting and challenging ride without the highway noise found in Seattle or King County. Use caution during high traffic periods.
