The loop uses 12.5 miles of single-track, 3 miles of pavement, and 2.5 miles of gravel roads. The trail follows the fingered shoreline of Applegate Lake and climbs many short, moderately difficult hills. There are two steep climbs on the south side of the reservoir, both about one-quarter mile long.
The trail is never too technical, but it is challenging enough to stay exciting. The trail surface is crushed rock, clay loam, and decomposed granite. The trail is generally in good condition. Expect some rocks and windfalls. The roads are in good condition. Starts at French Gulch Trailhead, located 25 miles southwest of Medford.
