The trail is soft and dusty in some spots, and just a touch rocky in others, but generally has a firm, smooth surface. Many spots along the trail invite you to stop and admire the imposing scenery- dry, beautiful hillsides; sheer canyon walls; majestic rock formations; and, of course, the Tieton River. You'll ride by sagebrush, cactus bushes, Oregon white oak, and further up the trail, ponderosa pine. You're also likely to see climbers on the Royal Columns, a popular hiking site. The trail beyond the beginner turnaround is an access trail to the canal for the Yakima- Tieton Irrigation District. A representative from the district kindly asked me to inform you of the following: DO NOT RIDE ON, OVER, AROUND, OR ALONGSIDE THE CANAL, OR RIDING PRIVILEGES WILL BE REVOKED! Ride with care; it's a highly sensitive trail in a highly sensitive area.
