Bicycling rural Thurston County can be sheer pleasure: riding on winding roads through evergreen forests that are so quiet you hear the gurgling of small creeks and birds singing praise. On clear days sunlight sparkles through the canopy, creating myriad shades of green that dance in the slightest breeze. The forest offers the sweet aroma of cedar. In cool weather all is calm and muted. There's a timeless quality to the untamed lands that still cover much of this area. In the valleys you pass old homesteads, small farms with simple buildings constructed of locally cut lumber and shingles. As you ride through alternating forests, meadow, and areas of scattered homes you are more likely to see sheep, cows and horses than people. Peacocks, deer and wolves wait for you as well. Terrain: rural roads over rolling hills and flat valleys. Roads are well maintained, and the stretches of highway with heavy traffic have good shoulders.
