I live in Skagit Valley. Leave car at new transportation Center in Mount Vernon. Take bike on Amtrak train around 9:00 am to Bellingham. Make reservation on line for self and bike.(25 minute ride is awesome. Pasture land, seashores, 5 tunnels, trestle crossing mouth of Mud Bay, an obscure kayak launch area leading out to Chuckanut Bay.) Depart at Bellingham Train Station. Ride south into Fairhaven and then to Chuckanut Drive. Favorite time: Least traffic is midweek after 10:30 am (train schedule is perfect) Sunny morning casts filtered sunlight, water views, fresh air, limited winds. Head south, go through Bow and Edison, take Bayview Edison Road to Bayview then Mclean Road east into west Mount Vernon, cross bridge into downtown Mount Vernon and back to train station. (Just north of Bayview stop to enjoy Breazeale - Padilla Bay Interpretive Center. After Bayview, ride on the Padilla Bay Shore Trail instead of on the road for a portion of the way.
Tips and cautions:
Check Amtrak Schedule. Get a seat on the left side of the train car. Wear brightest clothing, use rear view mirror.
Best if you ride briskly, not a road to dawdle on. Several "pull-offs" on lower southern portion. Enjoy the views! Would be 5 star save for traffic and narrow shoulders. Use caution. Might consider tall flag on rear. Worth the extra effort. Great eateries, bakeries, art in Bow and Edison. Ride accessable from La Conner. Also consider riding north and taking Amtrak south. P.
