Deep in the heart of Appalachia, the Highlands Classic offers the cyclist a splendid assortment of the Southwest Highland’s history, nature, and culture. Starting in Abingdon, the classic can be completed in one day by fit cyclists, although an overnight stay at Hungry Mother State Park is recommended. Take time to explore historic and charming Abingdon, with its 20-block historic district and numerous shops and galleries, along with its renowned Barter Theatre. Spend a night at one of Hungry Mother State Park’s cabins, and enjoy a swim in its cool 108-acre lake. In between, cycle through the rural, unspoiled countryside of Washington and Smyth counties, where Appalachian life unfolds at every turn. Terrain: Hilly, including one mountain crossing. Some long, flat to gently rolling stretches. Advanced difficulty.
